The Gambia: 12 dead after migrant boat shipwreck off Jinack Kajata

At least 12 bodies have been recovered following a migrant boat shipwreck off the coast of The Gambia. The Gambia Red Cross Society confirmed the deaths and stated that search and rescue operations are ongoing near Jinack Island to locate missing individuals.

The vessel reportedly departed from the village of Jinack Kajata, a known departure point for migrants attempting to reach the Canary Islands via the Atlantic route. The total number of people on board the vessel remains unconfirmed.

This tragedy occurs as migration patterns shift due to increased maritime patrols in Senegal, Mauritania, and Morocco. These heightened security measures have forced migrants to depart from more southern locations, such as The Gambia, significantly lengthening the hazardous journey and increasing the risks of overcrowding and capsizing.
