The Gambia expands electrification projects amid power generation concerns

The Gambian government has signed several contracts to expand electricity access across various regions, aiming for universal access by 2028. In the West Coast Region, contracts were signed with Kutehjumble Electrical & Consultancy Company Ltd and Powercon Mouguaw Enterprise to electrify 10 communities. Additionally, $14.1 million has been allocated for rural electrification in the Upper River and Central River Regions, with Alpha TND and Power Factor Limited tasked with the projects.

However, the EFSCRJ NAWEC Watch has raised concerns regarding these expenditures. The group argues that expanding the electrical grid without first increasing domestic generation capacity is “fundamentally imprudent,” warning that new connections may simply inherit the persistent outages currently affecting the country. They noted that The Gambia remains heavily dependent on imported power, citing recent payments to foreign suppliers in Senegal and Guinea to settle arrears. The watchdog cautioned that the government is “effectively building pipes while the well runs dry,” suggesting a need for greater investment in domestic energy sovereignty rather than just grid expansion.
