The Gambia faces development hurdles due to resource and labor limits

Ebrima Sillah, The Gambia’s Minister of Transport, Works, and Infrastructure, has highlighted significant obstacles to the nation’s development, citing limited economic resources and a shortage of skilled workers. Sillah noted that while the country possesses potential oil and mineral resources, they have not yet provided tangible benefits to the population.

He identified financial constraints as a primary factor slowing the pace of government development ambitions. Additionally, Sillah pointed to a lack of technical experts and professionals to execute national plans. He also raised concerns regarding the construction sector, noting that foreign workers receive an estimated 40 to 50 percent, or more, of the wages generated in the industry rather than Gambian citizens.
