The Gambia launches $12M CLIMB project for urban climate resilience

The Gambia has officially launched the Climate-Resilient Banjul: Enhancing Urban Resilience in the Greater Banjul Area (CLIMB) Project. Valued at over US$12 million, the initiative is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) through the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Vice President Mohammed B. S. Jallow presided over the launch, noting that while The Gambia contributes less than 0.01% of global greenhouse gas emissions, the country is highly vulnerable to rising sea levels, flooding, saltwater intrusion, and heat stress. The project is described as the first large-scale urban climate resilience initiative of its kind to be implemented in Africa.

The CLIMB Project is built upon three primary pillars:

1. Strengthening Governance: Integrating climate resilience into urban planning, infrastructure standards, and development practices. 2. Ecosystem-Based Adaptation: Protecting wetlands and mangroves while expanding green infrastructure and climate-smart urban farming. 3. Community Empowerment: Enhancing community knowledge, preparedness, and early warning systems to better respond to climate shocks.
