The Gambia pauses National Content Bill for policy development
The Gambian Minister of Trade, Regional Integration and Employment, Mod K. Ceesay, has announced that the National Content Bill is currently on hold. This pause is intended to allow for the simultaneous development of a Local Content Policy and specific regulations to ensure a more comprehensive framework for the bill’s operationalization.
Minister Ceesay explained that the Cabinet advised the Ministry to develop these accompanying instruments so that implementation can begin immediately once the legislation is passed and approved. The goal is to provide clear direction and scope for the bill through these integrated regulatory tools.
In a separate matter regarding trade, Minister Ceesay ruled out imposing a ban on imported bottled water to protect domestic manufacturers. He argued that such restrictions could damage regional trade relations with neighbors like Senegal and Guinea. Instead, the government plans to focus on providing incentives and support to help local producers increase their competitiveness in regional markets.
