The Gambia prepares for 2026 presidential election

As The Gambia approaches the presidential election scheduled for December 5, 2026, the political landscape is undergoing significant shifts. President Adama Barrow of the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) has strengthened his position through a formal electoral coalition with Mamma Kandeh and the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC). This pact effectively removes Kandeh from the presidential primary field and consolidates a significant rural vote, particularly in the Upper River Region, behind the incumbent.

Despite this consolidation, political analysts note growing domestic pressure regarding the high cost of living, youth unemployment, and the quality of healthcare and education systems.
