The Gambia signs China-funded deal to upgrade Greater Banjul power grid

The Gambia has signed a contract with China’s TBEA Company Limited to upgrade and expand electricity networks in the Greater Banjul Area. The project, funded through China Aid, is expected to be implemented over an 18-month period.

The initiative aims to rehabilitate medium- and low-voltage lines, install new transformers, and expand connections to more than 40 communities. Officials estimate the project will benefit approximately 80,000 residents, including households, businesses, schools, and healthcare facilities.

NAWEC Managing Director Gallo Saidy stated that the project is a critical step toward addressing long-standing weaknesses in the electricity sector and reducing frequent power outages. Chinese Ambassador Liu Jin noted that electricity remains a priority area of cooperation between the two nations.
