The Gambia to study Nigeria’s TETFund to support tertiary education financing

The Government of The Gambia has announced plans to send officials from its newly established Tertiary and Higher Education Trust (THET) Fund to Nigeria to study the operations of Nigeria’s Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).

During a visit to TETFund headquarters in Abuja, Gambian Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, Prof. Pierre Gomez, expressed interest in TETFund’s experience regarding research, infrastructure, and capacity development. Gomez noted that Gambian authorities have monitored TETFund’s achievements through various media platforms, which prompted the decision to establish a similar financing mechanism for The Gambia’s higher education system.

Sonny Echono, Executive Secretary of TETFund, welcomed the delegation and provided an overview of the agency’s evolution from the Education Trust Fund (ETF) to its current form. He explained that TETFund was created to address funding crises in Nigeria’s tertiary education sector, providing dedicated resources for instructional materials, academic staff training, and institutional infrastructure.
