The Hague bicycle parking facilities see 500,000 uses in three months

Bicycle parking facilities in The Hague have been used nearly half a million times over the past three months. This usage was tracked via the ‘Haagse Fietspas’, a pass launched in late May to facilitate quick parking and provide the municipality with data to better align facilities with cyclist needs.

Adeel Mahmood, the Alderman for Mobility, stated that these figures demonstrate a high demand for such services. The city emphasizes that quality parking helps keep sidewalks and squares clear for pedestrians, emergency services, wheelchair users, and parents with strollers. Additionally, managed facilities aim to combat bicycle theft, following more than 5,100 registered thefts last year.

The 18 parking facilities, managed by Biesieklette, provide a total capacity of 11,385 bicycles. Data from the Fietspas shows that approximately 75% of parked vehicles are regular or electric bicycles, 14% have crates or child seats, 7% are fat-tire bikes, 2.5% are cargo bikes, and about 1% are other two-wheelers like scooters or motorcycles.

The municipality intends to use this data to improve facility efficiency by 2027. A pilot program involving a loyalty system linked to the Fietspas is planned for early 2027, initially focusing on entrepreneurs in the city center, the coast, and the Leyweg area.
