The Hague cemetery theft investigation expands to three employees

The investigation into the theft of valuables from the Algemene Begraafplaats Kerkhoflaan in The Hague has expanded. The Public Prosecution Service (OM) reports that two colleagues of a 60-year-old grave digger are now suspects. The suspects are reportedly suspected of "whitewashing by selling valuable objects originating from the cemetery."

The initial suspect, a shift supervisor responsible for grave maintenance, was apprehended in May for allegedly stealing jewelry and gold fillings during work hours and selling them to a gold trader.

The Municipality of The Hague has launched an external integrity investigation into the cemetery department's processes, culture, and working environment. While the municipality has not confirmed whether the three employees have been dismissed, a spokesperson stated that "appropriate measures" have been taken. To date, sixty relatives have contacted a dedicated information line regarding the potential impact on their loved ones.
