The Hague faces resident backlash over parking loss for waste containers

In The Hague, residents have complained that neglected parking areas are being used as illegal dumping sites and that the municipality is not taking enforcement action. Council member Abdoel Haryouli reported uncovered trash bags, rubbish and abandoned vehicles on a parking lot near Waldorpstraat, describing it as "a storage and dump site rather than a regular parking location" and noting pest problems. The city replied that the land belongs to a owners' association and a private party, placing responsibility for clean‑up on them.

At the same time, the municipality plans to remove parking spaces in the Bezuidenhout‑Oost neighbourhood to install underground waste containers (ORACs). Residents argue the loss of parking aggravates an already high parking pressure of 94%, and they dispute the city's method of counting spaces, claiming "charging spots and embassy staff places are counted as parking". They are preparing a case before the Council of State, with Jacob Snijders saying, "We are now filing documents." The council says the new method of measuring parking pressure will be refined but will not alter the decision to install the containers.
