The Hague housing protest targets social housing shortages

The organization Straat Consulaat has organized a symbolic queue at The Hague City Hall to protest the long wait times for social housing. In the region, seekers currently face an average wait of six to seven years for a home.

As part of a National Action Week against homelessness, the group is calling on the municipal government to grant priority status to homeless individuals immediately, rather than waiting for national urgency regulations expected in 2028. Last year, 7,201 homeless people were recorded in the The Hague region, including nearly 1,000 individuals under the age of 18. The organization noted that seven out of ten homeless people currently fall outside of standard assistance services.

The demonstration in The Hague precedes World Homeless Day on October 10, which will conclude with a national housing protest at Dam Square in Amsterdam.
