The Hague man sentenced for romance-based fraud

A 63-year-old man from The Hague has been sentenced to 40 months in prison by the District Court of The Hague for a sophisticated fraud scheme. Of this sentence, 18 months are suspended with a three-year probation period. The man was ordered to pay over 200,000 euros in damages to his victims.

According to the court, the man used false identities to pose as a wealthy individual seeking romantic relationships. He claimed to have international business interests, including luxury watch trading and rental properties in Spain and Monaco, to gain the trust of women. He subsequently obtained money, cars, and expensive jewelry from them under false pretenses, such as promising to pay off loans or manage renovations.

In addition to the romance-based scams, the man was also convicted of a separate fraud involving the theft of jewelry under the guise of being a buyer who would assess the items for quality.
