The Hague to open new homeless family shelter on Statenlaan 46

The municipality of The Hague plans to convert the first floor of a building at Statenlaan 46 into a shelter for up to 30 homeless family members. The location will be used for five years, with the property offered free of charge by its owner and permitted under the residential zoning plan.

The shelter is aimed at larger families of five or more who have recently become homeless or are staying in hotels, and only families that can live independently are eligible. Social management will be available 24 hours a day to support residents and neighbours, and families will receive assistance with daytime activities, work and schooling.

Mayor‑in‑waiting Mariëlle Vavier praised the owner’s contribution, noting that the arrangement will save roughly €400 000 over five years compared with hotel accommodation. After an estimated three‑month renovation and three‑month preparation period, the municipality expects the shelter to open by the end of 2026. A national census from 2025 reported 6 246 homeless residents in The Hague, representing about 1.1 % of the city’s population.
