The Harris opens Horrockses Fashions exhibition in Preston

The Harris museum in Preston has launched a major new exhibition titled ‘Horrockses Fashions: Everyday Glamour and the Art of British Ready-to-Wear’. Running from 19th September 2026 until 31st January 2027, the display showcases the history of the Preston-based cotton firm that famously provided clothing for both royalty and the general public.

Queen Elizabeth II utilized Horrockses garments during her 1953-54 Commonwealth Tour, often selecting pieces from collections before they were released for public sale. Other royal admirers included Princess Margaret and the Duchess of Kent.

Key highlights of the exhibition include a rare map-print housecoat from the brand’s inaugural collection, one of only two known surviving examples, and a dress from the 1953 Coronation collection featuring the inscription ‘Elizabeth Regina 1953’. The Harris is displaying 60 garments from its collection of over 100 dresses.
