The Lancet highlights Internal Medicine's role in cardiometabolic disease care
The scientific journal The Lancet has published a letter highlighting the crucial role of Internal Medicine in the comprehensive management of cardiometabolic disease. The letter, authored by Dr. Carlos Guijarro and Dr. Pablo Pérez-Martínez of the Spanish Society of Internal Medicine (SEMI), addresses the challenges posed by the increasing fragmentation of care.
According to the authors, patients suffering from conditions such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, chronic kidney disease, metabolic liver disease, and cardiovascular disease often consult numerous specialists. This can lead to conflicting recommendations from different clinical guidelines, despite these conditions sharing common biological pathways and treatments. The authors argue that Internal Medicine is uniquely positioned to provide integrated decisions and clearly defined clinical responsibility, coordinating the specialized knowledge provided by cardiology, endocrinology, nephrology, and hepatology to meet the needs of patients with multimorbidity.
