The Lancet Oncology proposes roadmap to reduce cancer care inequalities

The Lancet Oncology Commission on Cancer Genomics and Precision Oncology has introduced a global roadmap aimed at making cancer genomics and precision oncology more accessible, sustainable, and equitable. Presented at the World Cancer Congress in Hong Kong, the commission addresses the significant disparities in how healthcare systems translate scientific genomic progress into clinical benefits for patients.

While advancements in molecular information have improved tumor classification and therapy selection, access remains deeply unequal. Most healthcare systems struggle to provide effective access to precision oncology, with molecular tests and innovative treatments largely concentrated in wealthy nations and well-equipped medical centers.

The commission also highlighted critical issues within the research and data ecosystems. Genomic research, biomarker-driven clinical trials, and the health data driving precision oncology are predominantly centered in high-income countries and Western populations, leaving data ecosystems fragmented and poorly integrated globally.
