The lymphatic system: functions, health risks, and social media trends

The lymphatic system serves as a vital network of vessels, nodes, and organs, such as the spleen and thymus, that transports lymph to regulate fluid balance, absorb dietary fats, and support immune function. Unlike the circulatory system, which is driven by the heart, lymphatic fluid moves through muscle contractions and respiratory impulses. Disruptions in this flow can lead to conditions like lymphedema, a painful swelling caused by fluid accumulation.

While lymphatic drainage has become a viral trend on social media promoted by ‘lymphfluencers,’ medical experts caution that its benefits are primarily proven in specific clinical contexts. Although interest in the system has surged recently due to social media and advancements in molecular imaging, researchers note that lymphatic education has historically been limited in medical training. To support natural lymphatic flow, health experts recommend hydration, regular physical movement, a balanced diet low in sodium, and gentle massage.
