The Met and Sabyasachi announce high jewelry collaboration

The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Indian luxury house Sabyasachi have announced a multi-year collaboration that integrates global art history with Indian craft traditions. The partnership will see designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee draw inspiration from the museum’s vast collection, spanning 5,000 years of culture, to create contemporary designs.

The inaugural phase of the collaboration focuses on a high jewelry collection debuting during New York Fashion Week this September. The collection draws heavily from the Byzantine Empire, as well as Greek, Roman, Medieval, and Islamic art. Notable design inspirations include a third-century Roman marble sarcophagus, which has been reimagined as a gold and gemstone wrist cuff, and a Roman funerary relief from Thrace, translated into a pendant necklace featuring tourmaline, garnet, jasper, lapis lazuli, and jade.

This partnership follows Mukherjee’s appearance as the first Indian fashion designer to walk the Met Gala carpet in 2024. While the current focus is on jewelry, future installments of the collaboration are expected to expand into accessories and clothing.
