The Morton Arboretum begins construction on solar installation
The Morton Arboretum has commenced construction on an on-site solar array designed to meet nearly all of the organization’s annual electrical requirements. The project is expected to generate more than 3 million kilowatt-hours of electricity each year.
Located on a south-facing hillside, the installation utilizes an innovative design intended to maximize energy production while using less than half the land required for a traditional solar array. The project is part of the nonprofit’s broader sustainability mission to reduce its carbon footprint and support the climate conditions necessary for tree conservation and research.
The solar array will be built, owned, and operated by Madison Energy Infrastructure, a firm based in New York and Virginia.
