The Muppet Show celebrates 50th anniversary and Emmy wins

The Muppet Show is celebrating its 50th anniversary, marking five decades since its original debut on September 5, 1976. Created by Jim Henson, the series was designed to provide sketch comedy for a broader audience beyond the children's programming seen on Sesame Street.

In conjunction with the anniversary, a recent Muppet revival variety special—which premiered on Disney+ and ABC—won four Creative Arts Emmy Awards. The special, executive produced by Seth Rogen and featuring guest Sabrina Carpenter, secured wins for Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded), Outstanding Writing For A Variety Special, Outstanding Production Design For A Variety Special, and Outstanding Picture Editing For Variety Programming.

The franchise has a long history dating back to Henson’s work on Sam and Friends, with the Muppets appearing on various programs including The Ed Sullivan Show and Saturday Night Live before establishing their own dedicated series.
