The film ‘The New Mutants’ serves as the final X-Men installment produced by 20th Century Fox, marking the end of an era for the franchise following the studio's acquisition by Disney.

Originally conceived by Josh Boone and Nate Lee as a horror-inspired spin-off set in an isolated psychiatric hospital, the project was intended to launch a trilogy of films based on different horror sub-genres. However, the production faced significant challenges, including multiple delays and creative shifts.

Following the completion of filming in late 2017, the release was postponed several times to accommodate other franchise titles like ‘Deadpool 2’ and ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’. The Disney-Fox merger further complicated the film's trajectory, ultimately leading to its 2020 release without the planned reshoots or the expansion of the character roster that had been previously discussed.
