The New York Times celebrates 175 years of journalism
The New York Times has marked its 175th anniversary, celebrating its evolution from a four-page publication founded on September 18, 1851, into a global digital journalism leader. To commemorate the milestone, the company rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange.
The organization currently maintains its largest newsroom in history and reports having more subscribers than any other subscription-based news business. The company attributes this growth to sustained investment in original journalism and the successful transition from print to a digital ecosystem involving radio, television, and artificial intelligence.
An editorial project running through mid-December will feature approximately 50 works by journalists examining the newspaper’s history, including both its major journalistic achievements and significant errors. This commemorative content, which includes a special issue of The New York Times Magazine, will be available for free online.
