The New York Times receives IAPA Grand Prize for Press Freedom
The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) has awarded The New York Times the 2026 Grand Prize for Press Freedom. The distinction recognizes the publication’s contributions to defending and promoting freedom of the press and freedom of expression throughout the Americas.
IAPA President Pierre Manigault stated that by resisting intimidation and defending the right to inform freely, the outlet protects fundamental liberties that support both the press and democratic citizenship. The organization highlighted the newspaper’s commitment to independent journalism and constitutional guarantees, particularly in a climate of increasing political and judicial pressures against media in the United States.
Specific actions cited include legal challenges against policies restricting press access to the Pentagon and the decision to vigorously defend against a multi-million dollar lawsuit intended to stifle investigative coverage. The award ceremony will take place during the 82nd IAPA General Assembly in Bogotá, Colombia, scheduled for October 2026.
