The Ocean Cleanup deploys autonomous robots to combat plastic pollution

The Ocean Cleanup, a Netherlands-based nonprofit founded by Boyan Slat, is deploying autonomous plastic-eating robots to combat global water pollution. These waterborne interceptors are currently operating in various cities, including Los Angeles, Mumbai, and Kuala Lumpur, to extract manmade garbage from waterways before it reaches the ocean.

The technology utilizes drones, GPS trackers, and remote-sensing cameras to monitor the removal process. The organization aims to remove 90 percent of all floating ocean plastic by 2040 through a combination of river interception, ocean extraction, and coastline sweeps.

Supported by funding from the Dutch government and corporations such as Deloitte, JP Morgan, and Kia, the project addresses the threat of microplastics entering the food chain. The initiative has also gained significant social media traction, particularly on TikTok.
