The Odyssey breaks R-rated box office records with $1.35 billion global haul

Christopher Nolan’s film adaptation of Homer’s epic, ‘The Odyssey’, has become the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, surpassing ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ with a global box office total of approximately $1.352 billion. Starring Matt Damon, the production has also become the highest-grossing film of Nolan’s career, exceeding his previous record held by ‘The Dark Knight Rises’.

Filmed entirely with 70mm IMAX cameras, the movie set a record for the largest IMAX release. The production utilized diverse international locations, including Morocco’s Aït Benhaddou and Essaouira, as well as Sicily, Italy, to recreate the ancient Mediterranean world.

Universal Pictures has announced that the film will transition to digital streaming and physical media, including 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray, on November 17, 2026. This follows an extended theatrical window of approximately four months, a strategy similar to Nolan’s previous release, ‘Oppenheimer’.
