The Odyssey becomes Universal Pictures' highest-grossing film

Christopher Nolan’s film, The Odyssey, has become the highest-grossing movie in the history of Universal Pictures. After approximately eight weeks of theatrical release, the epic has reached a worldwide box office total of approximately $1.68 billion, surpassing the previous studio record held by 2015’s Jurassic World ($1.677 billion).

Starring Matt Damon as Odysseus, the film is an adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic. It has achieved several milestones, including becoming the highest-grossing R-rated film and the third-largest non-franchise title of all time. The production, which cost roughly $250 million, saw significant success in premium formats such as IMAX.

In addition to setting a studio record, The Odyssey is the most commercially successful film of Christopher Nolan’s career, overtaking The Dark Knight Rises. NBCUniversal Entertainment Chairman Donna Langley described the film as a “generational event” that revitalizes the cinema experience.
