The Painting play by Ernesto Caballero debuts at Psirri Theatre
The play ‘The Painting’ by Spanish author Ernesto Caballero is making its Greek debut at the Psirri Theatre, directed by Michalis Panadis, starting October 15. The production features Ioanna Pappa, Yuli Tsagkaraki, and Angelos Andriopoulos.
A sharp contemporary comedy, the play is set in a near-future Spain where an economic crisis has crippled the European Union. In an attempt to save the economy, the government decides to sell off national cultural heritage, beginning with Velázquez’s masterpiece, ‘Las Meninas’. To facilitate this, a nun skilled in art forgery is commissioned to create a perfect replica. The story explores themes of political manipulation, deep fakes, and the influence of social media as the nun transforms from a religious figure into a viral media influencer.
