The Plaza Hotel to close for four years starting in 2027

The Plaza Hotel, a historic New York City landmark located at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Central Park South, will close for extensive renovations starting in January 2027. The closure is expected to last at least four years, with a potential reopening around 2031.

Management company Fairmont Hotels & Resorts stated that the multiyear project is necessary to perform comprehensive exterior repairs, masonry restoration, and facade maintenance while adhering to strict historic preservation guidelines. The undertaking is described as a complex effort to protect the architectural and cultural heritage of the 119-year-old building.

While the hotel's 282 guest rooms will be closed, the 181 private residential condo owners within the building will not be displaced, though they will face several years of exterior scaffolding. Regarding the hotel's workforce, reports indicate that employees may have the right to return to their positions with the same pay once operations resume, while the Hotel & Gaming Trades Council works to assist staff in finding interim employment.
