The Plaza Hotel to close for four years for facade restoration

The Plaza Hotel in New York City will close for at least four years starting in January 2027 to undergo extensive restoration of its landmark-protected facade. The announcement from Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, which manages the property, indicates that the project is necessary due to the complexity of maintaining the building’s historical and architectural significance.

The closure will impact the hotel’s 282 guest rooms, the Palm Court restaurant, and various event spaces. While the hospitality operations will suspend, the building’s 181 luxury condominium residences are expected to remain occupied. The restoration must adhere to strict historic preservation standards.

The sudden news has caused significant disruption for clients, particularly those who have booked high-end weddings and events. Event planners and couples report being left in a state of uncertainty regarding refunds and the need to secure new venues on short notice. Regarding the workforce, the Hotel & Gaming Trades Council intends to support employees, with reports suggesting staff may retain the right to return to their positions at current pay scales once the hotel reopens, potentially as early as 2031.
