The Plaza hotel to undergo major remodeling for 7-star luxury status

The Plaza hotel in Seoul will undergo a massive three-year remodeling project to transform into a ‘7-star high-end hotel.’ Hanwha Hotels & Resorts announced that the hotel will suspend operations on September 30 to facilitate the renovation, which is scheduled to begin early next year and conclude by 2029.

Marking its 50th anniversary, the renovation aims to shift the hotel's focus from deluxe rooms to premium suites, targeting global VIPs, government officials, and corporate executives. The project includes expanding club lounges, introducing Michelin-starred fine dining, and pursuing membership in ‘The Leading Hotels of the World.’ While the interior and room structures will change, the exterior design will maintain its original 1976 aesthetic to preserve its historical identity.

The project is part of a larger integrated development of the Sogong 1, 2, and 3 districts, which includes the Hanwha Building and Hanwha Financial Plaza. Additionally, the hotel will feature a new rooftop garden open to the public, offering views of Seoul City Hall, Gyeongbokgung Palace, and other historic landmarks. This initiative aligns with Hanwha Group’s broader high-end strategy, complementing other luxury ventures like the Galleria Department Store and the ANTO premium resort.
