The psychological and physiological impact of the color green

The color green is linked to significant psychological and physiological effects on the human body and mind. Associated with nature, safety, and renewal, exposure to green environments—such as parks, trees, or indoor plants—can act as a break for the nervous system amidst modern urban stressors like artificial light and constant digital notifications.

This connection has evolutionary roots, as the ability to recognize vegetation helped ancestors locate food, water, and safe spaces. Today, contact with natural environments is associated with lower stress levels, calmer heart rates, and increased relaxation. Unlike urban environments that keep the body in a state of constant alertness due to intense stimuli, natural settings provide milder stimuli that allow the brain and eyes to rest.
