The psychological impact of pet loss and grief
Research indicates that the death of a pet can cause profound emotional suffering and grief comparable to the loss of a human family member. A study of 975 adults published in the journal PLoS ONE found that one in five individuals who had lost both a pet and a person identified the pet's death as their most painful loss.
For those who identified the animal as their most significant loss, 7.5% developed prolonged grief disorder, a figure nearly identical to the 7.8% observed in those who lost a close friend. Experts note that pet loss disrupts daily routines, affects sleep, and can lead to intense feelings of guilt and emptiness.
Veterinary and mental health professionals are increasingly calling for society to recognize pet bereavement as a legitimate form of grief, rather than dismissing it, due to the deep emotional bonds and the significant impact on an individual's well-being.
