Bill Simmons under review for proxy betting on FanDuel
Podcaster and The Ringer founder Bill Simmons is under review by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission after admitting to using a proxy to place sports bets. Simmons disclosed on his podcast that while he was in California—a state where online sports betting is not legal—he had his daughter’s boyfriend, located in Massachusetts, log into his FanDuel account to place wagers.
FanDuel, a major sponsor of Simmons’ network, responded by voiding the bets and reporting the incident to state regulators. The company stated it acted in accordance with its terms and conditions and Massachusetts Gaming Commission regulations. Simmons noted that he was unaware of the specific rules regarding proxy betting and stated that he has “learned my lesson.”
The Massachusetts Gaming Commission has confirmed that staff are currently reviewing the matter. Under state law, proxy betting is prohibited, and operators are required to prevent individuals from wagering as agents for others.
