The Rocketeer estate moves to reclaim rights from Disney
The Rocketeer Trust, representing the estate of original creator Dave Stevens, has initiated legal proceedings to reclaim the underlying copyright rights for The Rocketeer from Walt Disney Pictures. Overseen by Stevens’ sister, Jennifer Bawcum, the trust reportedly served Disney with a Notice of Termination under Section 203 of the Copyright Act on June 11, 2026.
The termination is scheduled to take effect on June 12, 2028. If successful, the move would end Disney’s ability to produce new projects based on the character without negotiating a new licensing agreement. While the derivative-works exception allows Disney to continue distributing existing productions, any new sequels or reboots would require fresh rights.
The notice covers six foundational copyright registrations and identifies several Disney subsidiaries and partners, including Walt Disney Television, Hollywood Records, Funko, and Diamond Select Toys. The 1991 film, directed by Joe Johnston, has maintained a cult following despite its initial commercial struggles. Disney has attempted to revive the franchise multiple times over the last decade, including a project titled ‘The Return of the Rocketeer’ that stalled in 2025.
