The role of symbolism and ritual in human culture

Symbolism serves as a bridge between material objects and deeper meanings. Drawing on the work of anthropologist Mircea Eliade, the concept of the sacred is defined not strictly by religion, but by its function to provide meaning and rescue objects from banality.

Etymologically, the word symbol derives from the Greek 'sumballo', referring to clay tablets split in two and later reunited. This represents the connection between an idea and its material manifestation. Using the metaphor of a glove and a hand, the essence of a person is compared to a hand, while their personality and behavior act as the glove that allows that essence to interact with the world.

In various cultural contexts, even trivial actions like breaking a glass carry symbolic weight. Depending on the tradition, such an event can be viewed as a sign of good luck that purifies the environment, a portent of misfortune, or a ritualistic act used during celebrations to express joy and exuberance.
