The Salvation Army launches 9/11 anniversary campaign

The Salvation Army has launched the ‘Be That Something’ initiative to mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks. The campaign encourages community members to perform simple acts of kindness to support neighbors facing hardships, such as food insecurity or recent flooding.

National Commander Merle Heatwole noted that the organization deployed over 55,000 team members to Ground Zero, the Pentagon, and Shanksville following the attacks to support first responders and survivors. The initiative aims to replicate that spirit of unified community support in modern contexts.

Reflecting on the anniversary, Salvation Army responder Ken Tregellas shared his experience serving as the Red Zone coordinator at Ground Zero. Despite later developing cancer, Tregellas described his months spent supporting recovery workers and families as an honor.
