The Shards series premieres on Disney+ and FX

The psychological thriller series "The Shards," executive produced by Ryan Murphy, has premiered on FX and Disney+. Based on the semi-autobiographical novel by Bret Easton Ellis, the show is set in 1981 Los Angeles and follows Bret, a student at the elite Buckley School, as he navigates privilege, sexuality, and the terror of a serial killer known as "The Trawler."

Critics have noted the series' ability to blend high-society glamour with unsettling horror, though some reviews suggest the adaptation leans more into sensationalism than the subtlety of the original text. The plot also features a shadowy cult called the "Riders of the Afterlife" and touches upon the subtext of the burgeoning HIV/AIDS epidemic.

The cast includes Igby Rigney as a fictionalized Bret Easton Ellis, alongside Kaia Gerber, Homer Gere, Wes Bentley, and Evan Rachel Wood. The series utilizes an 80s-inspired soundtrack featuring tracks from Duran Duran and The Pretenders, alongside original music by Troye Sivan.
