The Shawshank Redemption 4K restoration premieres in China

The 4K restored version of the classic film ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ has officially premiered in mainland Chinese theaters as of August 28, 2026. This marks the first time the 1994 film has been released on the big screen in mainland China.

Distributed by Warner Bros., the release includes 2D, CINITY LED, and IMAX formats. Notably, the IMAX version represents the first global presentation of the film in this format. Directed by Frank Darabont and starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman, the film is based on a novella by Stephen King.

The film holds top rankings on both Douban and IMDb. Early ticket sales in Shanghai showed high demand, with several hundred tickets sold for large-capacity screenings.
