The Texas Chain Saw Massacre to receive rotoscoped animation

A hand-animated, rotoscoped version of the classic horror film ‘The Texas Chain Saw Massacre’ is scheduled for release in 2027. The project aims to reimagine Tobe Hooper’s 1974 film by having artists meticulously trace live-action footage frame by frame. The production is being led by Austin-based multimedia artist and animation director Paul Beck, known for his work on ‘Waking Life’ and ‘A Scanner Darkly’. The creators have specified that the project will employ no artificial intelligence, relying instead on the craftsmanship of veteran artists.

Fans will receive a first look at the animation process and additional footage during Texas Chain Saw Day. This event will include a behind-the-scenes featurette presented by Dark Sky Films and Fathom Events. Additionally, the original film is set to return to theaters on August 18, 2026, with special event screenings in Los Angeles and Austin featuring cinematographer Daniel Pearl and cast members Teri McMinn and Allen Danziger.
