The Virgin Mary in Islamic and Christian traditions

The Virgin Mary holds a significant and unique position in both Islamic and Christian traditions, though through different theological lenses. In Islam, Maryam is the only woman mentioned by name in the Quran, with the 19th surah named after her. She is revered as the virgin mother of Jesus, chosen by God and protected by divine grace. While she is a symbol of patience and strength in the Islamic consciousness, she is not referred to by the titles ‘Theotokos’ or ‘Panagia,’ as Islam does not recognize the divinity of Jesus.

In Greek culture, the relationship with the Panagia is deeply personal and integrated into daily life. Beyond formal religion, she is viewed as a maternal figure to whom people turn for comfort, courage, and help during times of fear or crisis. This cultural connection is reflected in various local names, songs, and traditions across Greece and Cyprus, where she is often seen as a figure who understands human suffering through her own experiences.
