The Who: Musical legacy and iconic discography

The British rock band The Who has maintained a significant cultural impact over six decades through musical innovation, including the use of synthesizers and the development of the rock opera.

One of their most notable singles, ‘My Generation’, was written by guitarist Pete Townshend and released in 1965. The track, known for its distinctive stuttering vocals by Roger Daltrey, was initially banned by the BBC. Townshend has attributed the song's inspiration to various sources, including a request from Irish fans to write music representing their generation.

Key albums in the band's discography include ‘Tommy’ (1969), a landmark rock opera that sold over 20 million copies; ‘Quadrophenia’ (1973), a complex conceptual work exploring identity; and ‘Who’s Next’ (1971), which is widely regarded as one of their greatest works and a pillar of 1970s rock.
