The Wicked Witch of the West and the legacy of Wicked

The Broadway musical Wicked, based on Gregory Maguire’s novel, premiered at the Gershwin Theatre on October 30, 2003. The production, which tells the untold story of Elphaba and Glinda, has become one of the longest running shows on Broadway and earned three Tony Awards and seven Drama Desk Awards.

Universal Pictures is currently adapting the musical into a film series. The first installment is scheduled for release in 2024, followed by the second half, titled Wicked for Good, in November 2025. The film stars Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, and Jeff Goldblum.

In popular culture, the character of the Wicked Witch of the West remains a significant figure of cinematic fear. For many, the character evokes childhood vulnerability and nostalgia, representing early encounters with genuine cinematic threats.
