The Witcher 3 Remastered hits Steam player record amid technical debate
The release of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered has driven a massive surge in player engagement, with concurrent users on Steam reaching a new peak of over 116,000. The update, provided free to existing owners, introduces significant technical and visual overhauls, including path tracing, improved textures, and a redesigned skill tree.
However, the launch has faced mixed reactions from the community. Many players have criticized the new lighting system, describing the visuals as “lifeless” or “washed out” due to excessive bloom and altered contrast, particularly on consoles where settings are more limited. Technical issues have also been reported, including performance drops related to NVIDIA Hairworks on PC, audio imbalances, and save file errors, prompting CD Projekt Red to release rapid patches and hotfixes.
On the Nintendo Switch 2, a unique licensing loophole has been discovered. Players can insert an original Nintendo Switch physical cartridge into the new hardware to trigger a free digital download of the Remastered version. Reports suggest this process can be repeated with the same cartridge, allowing multiple users to obtain digital copies without retaining the physical media.
