The Witness: A decade later, the puzzle game's final challenge remains a peak difficulty

A retrospective look at the 2016 puzzle game ‘The Witness’, developed by indie creator Jonathan Blow, highlights the intense difficulty of its optional final challenge. While the game’s core mechanics involve solving digital mazes across various island biomes using environmental clues, the ultimate test presents a significant barrier to most players.

The final trial involves a randomly generated set of 14 complex puzzles located within a cave. Players must locate these puzzles and solve them within a strict time limit of approximately 400 seconds, dictated by a gramophone playing classical music. The challenge allows no shortcuts, pauses, or external guides, making it a rare and highly difficult achievement for PlayStation players, with only a small percentage of players successfully completing it.
