The Wizard of Oz marks anniversary of 1939 Hollywood premiere

The film ‘The Wizard of Oz’ premiered at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood on August 15, 1939. Adapted from L. Frank Baum’s novel, the production was a massive undertaking for MGM, utilizing the then-novel Technicolor process to create its vibrant visual style.

Despite its status as a cultural touchstone today, the film faced significant production challenges and initial financial difficulties. The production was marked by grueling schedules and accidents; notably, Margaret Hamilton suffered third-degree burns during a scene involving green copper makeup, and the use of asbestos for snow effects raised potential long-term health concerns.

While the film is celebrated for iconic performances by Judy Garland and its timeless music, such as ‘Over the Rainbow’, it did not see immediate widespread profitability. MGM did not realize a profit on the film until its re-release in 1949.
