The X-Files director's cut to release on Disney+ and Hulu

Disney+ and Hulu will release the official director's cut of the 2008 film "The X-Files: I Want to Believe," titled "The X-Files: I Want to Believe – Vrach Frankenshteyn," on August 14, 2026. Created by franchise creator Chris Carter, this version is intended to be a darker, more horror-centric edit than the original theatrical release.

Originally released with a PG-13 rating, the film was reportedly edited down to be less frightening for cinema audiences. This restored R-rated version includes scenes previously removed, focusing on a more visceral and psychological thriller tone. The plot follows former FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully as they investigate the disappearance of a federal agent and a group of women, guided by the visions of a former priest.

In addition to the director's cut, the streaming platforms will also add the original 2008 film, "The X-Files: Regeneration," to their catalogs.
