Theater initiatives in Italy focus on prisoner rehabilitation

Various cultural initiatives in Italy are utilizing theater as a tool for prisoner rehabilitation and social dialogue.

At Sapienza University in Rome, the play “Joseph & Bros” will be performed as part of the “Dare corpo alla dignità” festival. The production explores themes of identity, faith, and responsibility through the lives of three men from different Mediterranean backgrounds sharing a prison cell. The performance will be followed by a discussion involving academics and prison rights advocates.

In Campania, the “Nello stesso mare” project, managed by La Nuova Comune APS, aims to provide inmates at the Secondigliano “Pasquale Modesto” prison with professional theater qualifications recognized by the regional government. Supported by the Ministry of Justice, the initiative focuses on using social and civil theater as a means of prevention, education, and reintegration into society.
