Theater productions highlight social themes in Brazil

The Grupo Comédia Cearense is concluding its season of the play “Viúva, porém honesta” this Sunday, August 30, at the Teatro Nadir Papi Saboya in Fortaleza. Directed by Hiroldo Serra, the production is based on the 1957 classic by Nelson Rodrigues, using humor to critique social conventions, hypocrisy, and human contradictions.

In other theatrical news, actress Isabel Santos is touring the play “Piedade, a seu dispô” as part of the Circuito Cultural Banco do Nordeste. The production, a collaboration with playwright Euler Lopes, explores themes of social inequality, violence, and human rights through the perspective of female characters. The tour includes stops in Juazeiro do Norte, Sousa, Mossoró, and Fortaleza.
