Thelma Buabeng discusses racism in the TV industry
Actress Thelma Buabeng has spoken out about her experiences with racism within the film and television industry. In a recent interview, the 45-year-old actor noted that early in her career, she was frequently offered small roles that relied on outdated stereotypes, such as playing domestic workers or other marginalized figures.
Buabeng shared that while she experienced racism during her school years, the most intense instances occurred during and after her professional acting training. She also noted that she was advised against pursuing a theater career due to the difficulties women face in that sector, and observed instances where white actors were used in blackface to fulfill roles.
Currently, Buabeng stars as BKA case analyst Gloria Acheampong in the ZDF crime series ‘Die Polizistin’. She is set to appear in the second installment, ‘Die Polizistin und die Totenstille’, which is scheduled for broadcast on September 21.
